A bananeira caiu

Cai cai bananeira

THE BANANA TREE FELL

But the machete chopped at the bottom
The banana tree fell

Fall, fall, banana tree
The banana tree fell

The berimbau has played in Capoeira
The berimbau has played I’m going to play

A MANTEIGA DERRAMOU

A manteiga do patrão, Caiu no chão e derramou

THE BUTTER SPILLED

I’m going to tell my lord
That the butter spilled

The butter is not mine, It is the master’s butter
It is the master’s butter, It fell in the water and got wet
The boss’ butter, It fell on the ground and spilled
The butter is not mine, It’s for the master’s daughter

A MARÉ TÁ CHEIA

A maré tá cheia ioio, a maré tá cheia iaia
A maré tá cheia ioio, a maré tá cheia iaia
A maré tá cheia ioio, a maré tá cheia iaia
A maré tá cheia ioio, a maré tá cheia iaia

Fui pra ilha de maré
Olha a maré de maré
Fui pra ilha de maré

THE TIDE IS HIGH

The tide is high my lord, the tide is high my lady
The tide is high my lord, the tide is high my lady
The tide is high my lord, the tide is high my lady
The tide is high my lord, the tide is high my lady

The tide went up
Go up tide
The tide went down
Go down tide

Look at the tide’s tide
I went to the island of tide
Look at the tide’s tide
I went to the island of tide

A NAVALHA

Cortou, deixa cortar
Cortou, deixa cortar

-Cortou, deixa cortar-

E a capoeira, invadiu meu coração
E nesta vida, só me deu satisfação

Graças a Deus, sei cair e levantar
Fazer aú, sair na ginga
E continuar a jogar

O lê lê lê, é capoeira, lê lê
É berimbau, lê lê
É capoeira de angola e regional

(Coro)

(Coro)

THE RAZOR

But the razor that’s in my pocket
Has cut, let it cut
Has cut, let it cut

-Has cut, let it cut-

Capoeira took over my heart
And in this life, has only given me satisfaction
I’ve learnt, but still don’t know it all
And beyond this it has already conquered the world

O lê lê lê, it’s capoeira, lê lê
It’s berimbau, lê lê
It’s capoeira angola and regional

O lê lê lê, it’s capoeira, lê lê
It’s berimbau, lê lê
It’s capoeira angola and regional

In my life, I’ve been tripped a lot
But it’s not a thing that can shake a capoeirista
Thank God, I know how to fall and get up
Do an aú, come out into a ginga
And keep on playing

O lê lê lê, it’s capoeira, lê lê
It’s berimbau, lê lê
It’s capoeira angola and regional

(Coro)

I can’t wait to play my berimbau
To hear the world sing the same
Paranauê, tim tim tim lá vai viola
To see them doing an inside game,
vibrate with an outside game

O lê lê lê, it’s capoeira, lê lê
It’s berimbau, lê lê
It’s capoeira angola and regional

(Coro)

A RODA VAI COMEÇAR

-Eu vim de muito longe
-Eu vim aqui foi pra jogar
-Já peguei meu berimbau
-Já começei a tocar
-Já chamei volta do mundo
-E a volta que o mundo dá, Camará

Bate palma minha gente
Que a roda vai começar

Bate palma minha gente
Que a roda vai começar

Se você nunca jogou
Hoje vai ter que jogar

Se você nunca rezou
Hoje vai ter que rezar

Se você nunca pulou
Hoje vai ter que pular

Meia lua vai subir,
O martelo vai quebrar

THE RODA WILL START

-I came from very far away
-I came here to play
-I already got my Berimbau
-I already started playing
-I already called for “volta do mundo”
-And the turn’s what the world will give, Comrades

Clap your hands everybody
As the roda will start

Clap your hands everybody
As the roda will start

If you’ve never played,
Today you’ll have to play

If you’ve never prayed,
Today you’ll have to pray

If you’ve never jumped,
Today you’ll have to jump

I came from very far away,
I came here to play

The meia lua is coming up,
The martelo is going to break

Seaside, seaside

The term beira-mar means sea-shore and the terms Ioio and Iaia are how slaves would usually refer to their masters and their masters’ children. This song gives reference to the sea-shores that often held such beauty in the northern states of Brazil and the fact that they would often belong to the slave-masters and mistresses.

This song makes reference to Doña Alice, who was one of Mestre Bimba’s wives. It is said that she happened to be one of the more jealous ones and would often be really clingy to Bimba. In relation to the roda, this song is sung when a capoeirista starts to get too grabby and maybe even a little violent, to try and hint that they need to calm they’re game down.

This particular corrido was originally written by Mestre Matias from the group Brasil Capoeira and is often used by many groups when a particular regional roda becomes a bit more fast paced. The song itself expresses how the art of capoeira has its roots well tied to the Brazilians and the lyrics demonstrate initially the instruments used during the roda but the original song also gives homage to legends and grand mestres of capoeira like Mestre Bimba and Pastinha. During the roda you can also give homage to the mestres, contra-mestres or instructors that are present in your roda or even your camaradas, your friends who are sharing the axé, the positive energy with you. This is also a good opportunity to learn any capoeira vocabulary during the roda by calling out movements or particular key-words during the roda so that non-portuguese speaking students may be exposed to more of the language.

EU PISEI NA FOLHA SECA

Eu pisei na folha seca
E ouvi fazer, chue chua
Chue chue chue chua
Ouvi fazer, chue chua

Mas quem não pode com mandinga
Não carrega patuá
Ouvi fazer, chue chua

Joga nego para cima
Deixa o nego invadiar,
Ouvi fazer chue chua

O guerreiro senzalero,
Essa cobra vai fumar
Ouvi fazer chue chua

I STEPPED ON THE DRY LEAVES

I stepped on the dry leaves
And heard them go ‘chue chua’
Chue chue chue chua
I heard it go chue chua

Whoever doesn’t have mandinga
Doesn’t carry their talisman
I heard it go chue chua

He plays high up
Let the guy close in
I heard it go chue chua

The slavehouse warrior,
That snake will smoke
I heard it go chue chua

FAMÍLIA DE OURO

Eu sou Capoeira sim senhor
Eu tenho uma familia de Ouro
A Capoeira é a minha vida
E a roda é o meu tesouro

Quando eu ouço o som do Berimbau
O meu corpo todo se arrepia
Toca no fundo da minha alma
E completa minha energia

(Coro)

Pandeiro, reco-reco e agogô
Mexe com o meu corpo inteiro
E seja na Angola ou Regional
Eu me transformo em um mandingueiro

(Coro)

Atabaque repicando swingado

FAMILY OF GOLD

I am Capoeira, yes sir
I have a golden family
Capoeira is my life
And the roda is my treasure

When I hear the sound of the Berimbau
My whole body gets the goosebumps
It touches the depths of my soul
And completes my energy

(Coro)

Pandeiro, reco-reco, e agogô
It moves my whole body
Whether it’s Angola or Regional
I transform into a mandingueiro

(Coro)

The atabaque rising and swinging
And a strong song from a good singer
I do Capoeira all day
But I train to be a good player

SOU CAPOEIRA

Quando toca me arrepia,
Hoje é dia de jogar

E o cantador solta a voz pro povo ouvir
Berimbau viola arma a roda e marca o som
A meia lua é ligeira e corta o vento
Capoeira joga dentro, como o mestre me ensinou

Sou Capoeira olha eu sei que sou
Eu vim aqui foi para jogar
Faço bonito só porque tenho talento
E solto meus movimentos com a voz no coração

E o Capoeira é astuto e é velhaco
É inimigo do perigo e confusão

(Coro)

I’M CAPOEIRA

What love is this that I have in my heart
A joy and a willingness to ginga
São Bento Grande, Iúna, Cavalaria
When it plays I get goosebumps,
Today is a day to play

And the singer sings for the people to listen
Berimbau viola sets the roda marks the sound
The meia lua is fast and cuts the wind
Capoeira plays inside, as the master taught me

I’m Capoeira look I know I am
I came here went to play
I do well just because I have talent
And I do my movements with the voice in my heart

And Capoeira is sharp-witted and crafty
It is the enemy of danger and trouble
But he knows the value of a life
That’s why he avoids fights and just wants to laze around

(Chorus)

O moleque chegou lá em casa,
Perguntando o que eu ia fazer,
Eu vou no mato, vou pegar biriba,
Pra minha viola fazer,

Tim, tim, tim lá vai viola

Digue, digue, digue, digue, digue, dom, dom
(Coro)

(Coro)

A roda tava desanimada,
O povo mal queria cantar,
Foi eu pegar na viola,
A roda inteira começou a jogar

TIM, TIM, TIM THERE GOES VIOLA

The kid came to my house,
Asking what I was going to do,
I’ll go to the bush, to get biriba,
To make my viola,

Tim, tim, tim there goes viola

Digue, digue, digue, digue, digue, dom, dom
(Chorus)

It’s just viola my dear, but it’s not a guitar,
(Chorus)

The roda wasn’t as excited,
The people barely wanted to sing,
But when I got the viola,
The entire roda started playing

VIM LÁ DA BAHIA PRA LHE VER

Vim lá da Bahia pra lhe ver
Vim lá da Bahia pra lhe ver
Vim lá da Bahia pra lhe ver
Pra lhe ver pra lhe ver
Pra lhe ver, pra lhe ver

I CAME THERE TO BAHIA TO SEE IT

I came there to Bahia to see it
I came there to Bahia to see it
I came there to Bahia to see it
To see it, to see it
To see it, to see it
